Frequently Asked Questions
Procurement and quality questions, answered the way a supplier questionnaire asks them.
Common Questions
If a question below is not covered, it can be answered directly — see the contact page.
What standards is CMM calibration performed under?
Calibration is performed to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by accredited laboratories, using documented procedures for request review, method selection and result release.
Can a CMM be calibrated on-site?
On-site calibration is scheduled where the machine's size, foundation or production schedule makes shipping impractical. Smaller gaging is generally handled at a laboratory.
What happens if a CMM fails calibration?
Out-of-tolerance conditions are reported with as-found and as-left data, and repair is quoted before any adjustment is made.
What appears on a calibration certificate?
Each certificate states the reference standards used, the reported measurement uncertainty, and the as-found and as-left condition of the instrument.
How often should a CMM be recalibrated?
Interval depends on usage, environment and internal quality procedures. Recalibration timing is set by a documented interval review instead of a fixed default.
Are portable arm CMMs calibrated the same way as bridge machines?
Portable arms are checked against volumetric and length measurement standards suited to their geometry, which differ from the routines used for bridge or gantry machines.
Can gauge blocks and surface plates be scheduled with a CMM visit?
Surface plates, gauge blocks, and ring and plug gauges are scheduled alongside CMM calibration so one visit covers an entire inspection department.
What is not included in a standard calibration visit?
Fixture design, part programming beyond a dry run, and structural rework of a machine base are quoted separately and are not part of a standard calibration.
What should be included with a calibration request?
Include the make, model and serial number of the instrument, its last calibration date if known, and whether on-site or depot service is preferred.
What measurement uncertainty is reported for CMM calibration?
Reported uncertainty depends on the machine's working volume, probe configuration and the reference standards used during calibration. The figure is stated on the certificate issued for that specific instrument.
